– Neither the people nor the time can work for me. They are a rather volatile entity – said the writer, my internal voice, while I was entering the cave where Saint Sava had his spiritual awakening. Our Lord had taken a speck of eternity and created me in His image. My duty is to celebrate His name through written words and, working my fingers to the bone, make people rejoice.
Radovan Vlahović
The book in front of us is a new testimony, a new confession of Man’s eternal life-yearning wrapped in a new robe. This yearning had been experienced, explored via introspection, articulated properly, and eventually made alive and timely by putting into words that are to serve as a gift for us all by Radovan Vlahović – a confessor and a writer. Guided by his insatiable need to live, breathe, work, and write on his terms, the Author has captivated us with his “Mount Athos travelogue storybook”.
Vlahović, completely openly yet meticulously and introspectively describes his compelling pilgrim journey to Mount Athos and his tone is always lively. All adventures, ascents and endeavors, brief stoppings, side trips, and constant self-examination are a symbolic representation of both the Author’s life and the hardships of physical journeys. In these snippets of his life, the Author recognizes his traveling companions as his companions-in-suffering and realizes that through interactions with them he will get new opportunities for reaching catharsis, attaining clarity of mind and bolstering his faith. Radovan is coming into contact with the Fathomless and the Nature, while we as the readers are coming into contact with Radovan himself.
While on this ethereal odyssey, which sounded merely like an impossible dream during the schooldays of our Author, Radovan touches the edges of Hilandar and faith itself by stepping on the shores of Mount Athos, mirroring the biblical narrative of the bleeding woman who touched Jesus in hope that her pain will go away.
